FEARLESS COOKING CHICAGO

Authorized Greenfield designer Shannon Davis Johnston of Shannon Davis Designs recently completed a commercial cooking school space, Fearless Cooking, in Chicago, Illinois for owner Catherine Siebel. Shannon had remodeled Catherine’s kitchen seven years ago, and Catherine had reached out to Shannon when she started on her “fearless” adventure.

One of Catherine’s major considerations in a cabinet manufacturer was eco-friendly options. Greenfield offers a variety of composite veneers, which are made from managed renewable resources. They also look and feel exotic. These types of composites are dyed like fabric, so the color maintains consistency, and they do not age like real woods.  Because of this, Shannon designed with Composite Quartered White Wash Oak in the Estridge door style, and offset it with Sherwin-Williams® Amazing Gray in the Farmington slab door style, for a contemporary look. They chose simple hardware and a bright white geometric porcelain tile. They included some of Greenfield’s most popular accessories, such as pull-out stainless utensil storage, hanging pot organizer and tray dividers.

For most cooking school designs, the store is in the front window, and the working kitchen is in the back. Fearless Cooking opted for the kitchen to be viewable from the front window with the store in the back. This allows the cooking space to be visible from the sidewalk, and lends a sense of community. “It’s almost as if patrons are invited to gather in someone’s home,” Shannon comments. “People can walk by and see the fun activities going on inside,” she adds. With this floorplan the entry could still maintain an open feel, but maximize seating.

Fearless Cooking opened on August 24th of this year. They offer cooking classes for every day home cooks to learn simple and stress-free recipes. Their classes range from “Baby Food Making” to “Work Lunches of the Week”. They also sell gifts, cook and bakeware, and gourmet foods. They have a strong emphasis on products made in the United States (local whenever possible) and eco-friendly and sustainable products.
